Jayanti Devi Temple is dedicated to Jayanti, the Hindu deity of victory. Pilgrims from near and far come in droves to pay their respects to the local deity. Families with newborn babies come to seek her blessings for their children.
The temple stands in Punjab, about 15 km from Chandigarh. The shrine sits on a hilltop, reached by more than 100 narrow steps. Every year a two-day fair is held here, and it opens with the Chinjj, an earthen wrestling contest that draws crowds in the thousands.
Langar, a community kitchen, serves thousands of devotees during the fair. They eat together after bowing before Jayanti Devi. Sundays and Tuesdays see a lot of pilgrims visiting the temple. The Tribune reported close to 50,000 pilgrims at one fair.
