Sikh ruler Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of the Patiala State financed the temple in his capital and oversaw its installation in 1936. He had the statue of Divine Mother Kali and the Paawan Jyoti brought from Bengal to Patiala. A much older temple of Raj Rajeshwari stands in the centre of the same complex.
Legend says the Maharaja raised the temple as a safeguard for the city against floods. Patiala is a city in southeastern Punjab, the fourth largest city in the state, and the administrative capital of Patiala district.
