Why devotees come here
Durgiana Temple is a Hindu temple in Amritsar, Punjab, dedicated to Devi Durga. It stands in the middle of a sacred lake near Hathi Gate, and a bridge leads to it.
The temple takes its name from Devi Durga, the chief deity worshipped here. Murtis of Lakshmi and Vishnu are also worshipped in the temple. Legend says Shri Rama visited this ground during the Ashwamedha Yagya.
The original temple is said to date from the 16th century. Guru Harsai Mal Kapoor rebuilt it in 1921 in the style of the Golden Temple, the Harmandir Sahib. An Amritsar District Gazetteer of 1893 mentions the Durgiana Sarovar. The temple and its precincts were under a beautification programme from 2013 to 2015, and a plan for the area was first conceived in 1977.
The temple is built in the middle of a sacred lake that measures 160 metres by 130 metres. A bridge provides the approach to it. The dome of the temple is gilded, and marble is used extensively in its features. The dome and canopies are similar to those of the Golden Temple. A monumental silver door, the Darshni Deori, stands 12 by 12 feet at the entrance.
