Why devotees come here
Kadyavarcha Ganpati Temple sits on a hill above Anjarle village in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra. Its Ganesha idol has a trunk that turns right, which sets it apart from most idols. The climb rewards visitors with views of the sea and river.
The temple is named Kadyavarcha Ganapati and is dedicated to Ganesha. Its idol has a trunk that curves to the right, unlike most Ganesha idols, which curve left. The idol is said to be a jagrut daiwat, a living deity that answers the pleas of those who pray.
The temple is thought to date from the 11th or 12th century. The first temple was built with wooden pillars around 1150, and it was renovated between 1768 and 1780. The temple's administration has been with the Nitsure family since 1630. Beside the Ganesha temple stands a small temple to Shiva.
Anjarle is a small port near the mouth of the Jog river. The temple stands on the hill above the village, and the path to it runs through the village itself.
