Why devotees come here
Kardameshwar Mahadev Temple stands in Kandwa, on the southern outskirts of Varanasi near Chitaipur. It marks the first night halt of the Panchakroshi Yatra, the revered pilgrimage around Varanasi. Legend says its lingam was installed by Sage Kardama Prajapati.
Legend says the Shiva lingam here was installed by Sage Kardama Prajapati, one of the primordial creators of life. The people of Kandwa believe that Shiva's first steps in Varanasi were taken in their village. The temple also marks the first night halt of the Panchakroshi Yatra, a revered pilgrimage around Varanasi.
The images inside are mostly of Shiva, but the walls also show Vishnu, Devi, Ganesha, Surya, and the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna. The temple's distinctive feature is what it lacks. Its corner walls have no Ashtadikpalas, the guardian figures of the eight directions, and that absence sets the design apart.
The temple has a rectangular water pool, the Kardama Kunda, and a well, the Kardama Kupa. Pilgrims sprinkle water on themselves from the pool, and water from the well is used in oblations. A small roof protects the well. Devout pilgrims see their reflection in its water and believe their life is safe.
