Nandgaon is a historical town in Mathura district. The town is named after Nandi, Shiva's bull, and was once called Nandigrama. Before the sixteenth century it was not linked with Krishna. The hill above the town was known as Nandishvar or Rudraparvata, and regarded as Shiva's own form. Several tanks and ponds around the town are associated with events from Krishna's life.
The current Nandarayji temple on the peak was built in the mid-eighteenth century by Rup Singh, a Sinsinwar Jat. It houses identical images of Krishna and Balarama, flanked by Nanda and Yashoda. The temple stands at the peak of the hill above the town.
Nandgaon is the twin town of Barsana, and both lie in Mathura district. Barsana is known for the historical Radha Rani Temple, its main attraction.
