Why devotees come here
Kaushalya Mata Temple stands in Chandkhuri village, about 27 km from Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is said to be the only temple in the world dedicated to Mata Kaushalya, mother of Shri Ram.
The idol shows Mata Kaushalya holding Shri Ram in her lap. Legend says Ram spent much of his exile in the woods of this province, which was earlier known as Dandakaranya, so the area is linked to his story.
The temple is believed to have been built in the 8th century. Over the centuries it was damaged and rebuilt many times, and it was renovated in 1973. It stands in the middle of a lake surrounded by Chandkhuri village, and visitors reach it on foot across the Hanuman Pul bridge, which has a statue of Hanuman on it.
In 2020 Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel laid the foundation stone for its expansion, a few days before the foundation stone of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Development work under the Ram Van Gaman Path project started here in October 2021. The chief minister inaugurated the renovated temple, and a 51-foot statue of Shri Ram was unveiled at the event.
