Why devotees come here
Laxman Temple stands at Sirpur in Mahasamund district, Chhattisgarh, on the banks of the Mahanadi river. It is a 7th-century brick temple and the earliest dated monument at Sirpur. Its sanctum opens to the east, and a Vishnu carving sits above its door.
Sirpur was once called Shripur and was the capital of South Kosala. Its temple ruins are tied to Rama and Lakshmana of the Ramayana, and the Laxman temple is one of those ruins. Wider attention came in 1882, when Alexander Cunningham, a British colonial official, visited the site. His report on the Laxman temple brought Sirpur to international attention.
The Laxman temple is a 7th-century brick temple, and much of it is damaged and in ruins. It is the earliest dated monument at Sirpur, dated to 595-605 CE. It stands on a stone platform about 40 by 80 feet (12 m by 24 m), wide enough to walk around the shrine, and its sanctum opens to the east.
Carvings above the lintel of the sanctum door show Vishnu reclining on Sesha, the serpent couch, and a panel shows Krishna from the Bhagavata Purana. Sirpur lies on the banks of the Mahanadi river, in Mahasamund district. An Archaeological Survey of India museum stands on the temple premises, with artwork and ruins from excavations in the 1950s and in the 2000s.
