Why devotees come here
Kodi Kuzhagar Temple, also called Amrithakadeswarar Temple, is a Shiva temple in Kodikkarai, Nagapattinam district. It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalam, the shrines praised in the 7th-century Tevaram. The temple is worshipped as Kuzhagar, with Thdangani Amman.
The Tevaram, a 7th-century Tamil Saiva work by Sundarar and Tirugnanasambandar, calls the place Kuzhagar Kovil. The central shrine faces east and holds a granite lingam of Kuzhagar, the name used for Shiva here. Thdangani Amman is worshipped here too.
The temple is believed to have been first built by the Cholas, and several inscriptions from the Chola period survive. They record various grants to the temple, from the reign of Aditya Chola to that of Kulothunga Chola I, who ruled from 1070 to 1120 CE. The complex has three prakarams, or outer courtyards, and a five-tiered rajagopuram, the gateway tower. The Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Tamil Nadu government maintains and administers the temple.
Each ritual has four steps: abhisheka, the sacred bath; alangaram, decoration; naivethanam, the food offering; and deepa aradanai, the waving of lamps. The ten-day Vaikasi Visagam and the six-day Sashti are the major festivals, and the annual Brahmotsavam draws thousands of devotees.
