Mankameshwar is a Shiva temple in Lucknow, and the shivling is its main image. A Times of India report describes it as a 1,000-year-old shrine. The same newspaper reports that a 700-year-old Shivratri tradition was set aside in one year, and the jalabhishek, the pouring of holy water over the shivling, was done with water from the Gomti. On Mahashivratri, water from 11 rivers has also been poured on the shivling.
Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and the seat of its district administration. The city lies on the Gomti River, which divides the city into the Trans-Gomti and Cis-Gomti parts. District tradition says the town was first called Lakhanapuri, in honour of Lakshmana, the brother of Shri Ramchandra. One legend also links the city's name to Lakshmana, a hero of the Ramayana. This is tradition and not proven history.
