The temple is dedicated to Shiva and stands on the left bank of the Vamsadhara river. The village is in Jalumuru mandal of Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. It is also known as Srimukhalingam or Mukhalinga, and it is both a village and a gram panchayat, a local village council area.
The complex is a group of three temples, each dedicated to a different form of Shiva: Mukhalingeswara, Bhimeswara and Someswara. It is built in Indo-Aryan style. At the entrance, a huge arched gate has two lions on each side of the staircases. The first gate leads to the outer enclosure, where a Nandi stands in a mandapam, which is a pillared hall.
Before Maha Shivaratri, officials called the place Dakshina Kashi and said the temple has been a centre of worship for thousands of years. The village lies very near Paralakhemundi town in Odisha, the headquarters of Gajapati district, so the two places sit in different states.
