Why devotees come here
Srikurmam is a temple to Vishnu as Kurma, in Gara mandal of Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. It is described as the only known pre-14th-century Indian temple dedicated to the Kurma avatar.
Srikurmam is a temple to Vishnu as Kurmanathaswamy, with his consort Lakshmi as Kurmanayaki. Legend says a king named Swetha Chakravarthi bathed in the lake made by Vishnu's discus and regained his health. The lake was then called Swetha Pushkarani.
Another legend says that Balarama, in resentment, cursed the temple. Because of that curse, Srikurmam is the only temple where Vishnu is worshipped in the form of Kurma Narayana.
The earliest inscription at the temple records that in saka 1035 CE, Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty of Odisha converted it from a Shiva temple into a Vaishnava one. Its origins trace back to the Eastern Ganga dynasty, and it later flourished under the patronage of the Suryavanshi Gajapatis. The temple also has two dhvajasthambas, or flag posts, one on the west and one on the east, a rare feature in a Vaishnavite temple.
