Why devotees come here
Nagaraja Temple stands in Nagercoil, the headquarters of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. The town takes its name from the temple, which is dedicated to Nagaraja, the King of Snakes. The district government calls it the only big temple built exclusively for Nagaraja worship in Tamil Nadu.
The main deity is Nagaraja, the king of snakes. The district government describes him as the serpent deity and the presiding deity of the temple. The Nagaraja idol is installed on the ground where it was first found. The sand from that spot is scooped out and given to devotees as prasadam. Idols of Shiva and Ananthakrishna are also enshrined here.
The district government calls this the only big temple built exclusively for Nagaraja worship in Tamil Nadu. Sculptures of the Jain Thirthankaras Mahavira and Parsavanathar are etched on the temple pillars. The entrance is reminiscent of Chinese architecture of a Buddhist vihar.
The town takes its name from the temple. Nagercoil is now the headquarters of Kanyakumari district, and the temple stands in the town itself.
