Why devotees come here
Nambi Rayar Temple is a Vishnu shrine in Thirukurungudi village, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu. Vishnu is worshipped here as Vaishnava Nambi, with his consort Thirukurungudivalli, and the temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams. Its gateway tower, the rajagopuram, is 110 ft (34 m) tall.
The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples praised in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham. Locals call the place Dakshina Vaikuntam, the ultimate destination of Vaishnavites. It is believed that Thirumangai Alvar spent his last days here and attained moksha, liberation.
Legend says Vaishnava Nambi appeared to slay the asura Somuka, who had abducted the four Vedas. Another legend is about the devotee Nambaduvan. He sang outside the temple, and Nambi, pleased by his devotion, appeared outside as well.
Inscriptions from the 10th century Medieval Chola period record grants to the temple, given in the form of sheep, and three copper plate inscriptions dated 1456, 1537 and 1592 record more. The Nayak period in the 15th century added many pillared halls. The temple is built in the Dravidian style. Five enclosures, called prakarams, make up the complex, and all the shrines lie within the first two.
