Thiruvazhmarban temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the shrines of Vishnu. Legend says the seven sages, the Saptarishis, worshipped Vishnu at this place. The village is also the birthplace of Nammalvar, one of the twelve Alvar saints. The temple lies about 5 km north-east of Nagercoil and 20 km north-west of Kanyakumari.
Legend says King Kulasekara built the temple and named the place Thiruvanparisaram. The oldest inscription in the temple dates from 1139 CE and records gifts made to it. A local account credits Thirumalai Nayak (1623-59 CE) with building the stepped temple tank.
The temple covers about 2 acres and has a five-tiered gopuram, or gateway tower. A hall named Kalyana Vimana Mandapa stands near the tank, with paintings of Dashavatara, the ten avatars of Vishnu. The car festival at the temple forms part of the Chithirai festival, when the festival deities travel through the streets.
