Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya planned this temple to replicate the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir on the campus of Banaras Hindu University. It is primarily dedicated to Shiva, and nine shrines sit within one temple. The temple is open to people from all castes, religions and religious beliefs.
The Birla family undertook the construction, and the foundation was laid in March 1931. After 35 years of work, the grand structure was completed in 1966. It stands about 1.7 km inside the campus, south-west of the main gate.
The temple is built mainly of marble and rises about 77 meters. Its design was inspired by the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. Its marble walls are engraved with verses from the Bhagavad Gita and other holy scriptures.
