Why devotees come here
Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple stands on the banks of the Assi river in Varanasi. It is dedicated to Hanuman in his form as Sankat Mochan. The poet saint Tulsidas, author of the Ramcharitmanas, established it in the early 16th century.
Devotees believe Tulsidas, author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, had a divine vision of Hanuman at this place. The temple was founded on that spot, and it honours Hanuman in his form as Sankat Mochan. The temple sits on the banks of the Assi river, in the city of Varanasi.
Tulsidas established the temple in the early 16th century. Most of the complex's modern buildings went up in the mid 20th century, as the site grew in importance. The inner shrine holds a stone image of Hanuman that is attributed to Tulsidas's era. Carvings and an ancient idol of Hanuman that has withstood centuries are also part of the temple.
Hanuman Jayanti draws thousands of worshippers. The Shobha Yatra procession starts from the nearby Durgakund Temple. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, thousands of devotees gather to pray and ask Hanuman for his blessings. The annual Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, a classical music and dance event, is held in April every year.
