Why devotees come here
The Sree Krishna Swamy Temple stands in the centre of Neyyattinkara town, in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. Sree Krishna is the presiding deity, and the image faces east. It is an important pilgrimage centre, and its story is tied to Crown Prince Marthanda Varma and to Ammachi Plavu, an old jackfruit tree on its grounds.
Legend says Crown Prince Marthanda Varma hid inside a jackfruit tree near this temple to escape his enemies. He hid within the tree's hollow and escaped what would almost certainly have been death. The old tree still stands in the temple premises and is known as Ammachi Plavu. The story is a legend, so it is best read as local belief rather than settled history.
Neyyattinkara is a municipal town in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, and the temple stands in its centre. The town lies 18 km south of Thiruvananthapuram city, on the road to Kanyakumari. Marthanda Varma established the temple in 1755. Sree Krishna is the presiding deity and faces east, with Ganapathi and Nagam as the sub-deities. A ten-day festival with an arattu is held on a Rohini star day in the Malayalam month of Meena. Ashtami Rohini, Vishu, Navarathri and Mandalapooja are also observed here.
