Why devotees come here
Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple stands on the northern side of the Cauvery at Thiruvilandur, in the town of Mayiladuthurai. Vishnu is worshipped here as Parimala Ranganathar, shown in a reclining posture. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples revered in the Vaishnava canon.
The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the Vishnu temples revered in the Vaishnava canon. It is also one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams, the five Ranganatha temples on the Cauvery. Legend says Chandra, the moon deity, was relieved of his curse here. The iconography shows the Ganga at the deity's feet and the Cauvery near his head. The reclining image is about 12 feet long and made of green stone. It faces east.
The temple is believed to be of significant antiquity. Contributions came at different times from the Medieval Cholas, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Madurai Nayaks. The rajagopuram, the main gateway, has five tiers. The temple has three prakarams, or precincts, that house all its shrines. The Garuda Mandapam has sculpted pillars, and its images show 10 avatars of Vishnu.
Restoration work has cleaned the granite sculptures, pillars and roof in the prakara mandapams, using modern technology.
