One account says it is about 2000 years old. Another dates the Jain centre to the 10th century, under the Paramaras.
The Jain complex at Maksi has two temples. The larger one, called Bada Mandir, is dedicated to Parshvanatha. A second temple, built in 1842 CE, is dedicated to Suparshvanatha. The complex also holds 42 Jain images that were installed in 1491 CE.
An inscription dated 1725 CE records a meeting of the Jain community at Ujjain to discuss repairs to the temple. Every year a nine-day fair in honour of Parshvanatha is held in April.
