Why devotees come here
Parvati Hill Temple stands on the second highest point in Pune, with a wide view over the city. The main shrine, Devdeveshwar, is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati. It is the oldest heritage structure in the city, built under the Peshwas.
The hilltop has five temples. The main one, Devdeveshwar, is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati and is built of blackstone. The others are dedicated to Vitthal and Rukmini, Vishnu and Kartikeya. A group of Ganesh and Kartikeya shrines here is dated to the time of Nana Saheb Peshwa.
One account says the Peshwa bought the hill to build a Shiva temple. Another says a Devi temple on the hill was believed to belong to the kulswami, the family deity, of a man named Taware. After that, the Peshwa built a temple complex on the hill.
The main temple was completed under Balaji Baji Rao in 1749, and a gold pinnacle was added in 1760. Records say the main idol was first carved from gold by craftsmen from Karnataka. After it was stolen in 1932, it was replaced by silver idols plated with gold. Balaji Baji Rao himself died on this hill in June 1761.
