Why devotees come here
Periyapalayam Bhavani Amman Temple is in Periyapalayam village, about 45 km from Chennai in Tiruvallur district. Bhavani Amman is the main deity, and the Arani river splits the village into a temple side and a residential side. The village lies on the main Chennai to Tirupati road.
Legend says Bhavani Amman is the sister of Krishna. She escaped from Kamsan, the demon king. After warning him of his death, she chose to settle at this place in the name of Sri Bhavani.
Periyapalayam lies on the banks of the Arani river. The river divides the village into a temple side and a residential side. The village is in Ellapuram block of Tiruvallur district. People throng here in thousands on weekends and in the Aadi and Avani months.
The image is shown with a discus and conch in its upper hands, and a sword and a pot of nectar in its lower hands. After a recent renovation, the entrance has a separate Vinayagar shrine, then a shrine to Sri Sarva Sakthi Mathangi Amman, before the main shrine.
