Why devotees come here
Sandipani Ashram stands at the foot of Mangalnath road in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Legend says Krishna and Balarama studied here under Guru Sandipani. Followers of the Vallabh sect count it as the 73rd of the 84 seats of Vallabhacharya.
The Bhagavata Purana tells a story about Sandipani. While Krishna, Balarama and their friend Sudama stayed as students at his residence, the three mastered every lesson after being taught it only once. The Vallabh sect counts the ashram as the 73rd of the 84 seats where Vallabhacharya gave his discourses across India.
The Harivamsa Purana tells a further episode. Krishna learns that Sandipani's son was swallowed by an asura called Panchajana and had died. The tourism board also says that legend has it Krishna did his schooling here. These are told as legend, not as settled history.
The grounds hold a stone with the numbers 1 to 100, believed to have been engraved by Guru Sandipani. Gomti Kund, named in the Puranas, was the ashram's water source in the old days. An image of Nandi by the pond dates to the Shunga period. The nearby area of Ankpat is where Krishna is believed to have washed his writings.
