Mahoba is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region. The town is associated with the Chandela kings, who ruled Bundelkhand between the 9th and 12th centuries. The district is also known as Alha-Udal Nagari. The name Mahoba is said to come from Mahotsav Nagar, the city of great festivals. Mahoba is known for its closeness to Khajuraho, Charkhari, Kulpahar, Kalinjar, Orchha and Jhansi.
Its main fair, Kajli Mela, is held every year 3 days after Raksha Bandhan. Legend says the warriors Aalha and Udal were born near Mahoba and raised under King Parmar. Legend also says they defended the city against Prithviraj Chauhan. The fair is linked with their story, and the district government lists the temple among the tourist places of Mahoba.
