Why devotees come here
Kamadgiri is one of the sacred mountains of the Chitrakoot Parvat Mala in Uttar Pradesh. The Chitrakoot area is tied in local belief to Rama's years of exile. Pilgrims gather at the Chitrakoot sites on every Amavasya.
Kamadgiri is one of the religious mountains of the Chitrakoot Parvat Mala, along with Hanumaan Dhara, Janki Kund, Lakshman Pahari and Devangana. Local belief ties the whole area to Rama. According to the Ramayana, Bharat came to Chitrakoot to ask Rama to return to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom. Legend also says Rama spent 11 years of exile here.
The first known mention of the place is in the Valmiki Ramayan. That work is believed to be the first Mahakavya, a great classical poem, composed by the first poet. Chitrakoot Dham lies on the bank of the Mandakini river, among mountainous terrain. The Chitrakoot district was created on 4 September 1998. Chitrakoot falls in the northern Vindhya range of mountains, which spreads over Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Pilgrims also gather at the sites on several special occasions through the year.
