Sukrala Devi is described as the most famous mother shrine of Kathua district. The shrine is the abode of Mal Devi, believed to be a re-incarnation of Sharda Devi. She has manifested herself here as a stone slab, seated on a brass lion with a silver-mounted head.
The shrine is believed to have been built by Madho Singh, an exiled prince of Chamba in Himachal Pradesh. Behind the main image stands a figure of Mahishasur Murdini, a re-incarnation of Maha-Luxmi, standing on the body of the demon king Mahishasur. Mal Devi is shown four-armed, holding a sword in one hand.
The shrine stands at a height of 3500 ft on a hillock amid wooded surroundings. Pilgrims have to climb many flights of steps to reach the temple. The shrine lies in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, an Indian Union Territory. Billawar, the nearby town, is known for the shrine, and several devotees throng it during Navaratri.
