Why devotees come here
Tijara Jain Temple is a digambar Jain temple dedicated to Chandra Prabhu, in the town of Tijara in Alwar district, Rajasthan. Jains call it an Atishaya Kshetra, a holy place where extraordinary events are said to happen. Its inner hall can hold about 2000 people.
The main deity is Chandra Prabhu, the eighth Tirthankara of Jainism, and the temple is dedicated to him. Jains regard the place as an Atishaya Kshetra, a holy place where extraordinary events are said to happen. Belief holds that Tijara was once a dehra, a place where Jain idols were worshipped. A white stone idol retrieved from underground is read as support for this.
The present temple was established in 1956, after an idol of Chandraprabha was recovered during an excavation on 16 August 1956. An inscription on the main idol dates its installation to 1497 (V.S. 1554). A second idol of Chandra Prabhu, 8 inches tall and in the same lotus position, was found in 1972, and that find is also read as a sign of the place's older role.
The temple has a rectangular layout and a tall pinnacle that can be seen from a good distance. Its walls carry carvings, paintings and glasswork showing scenes from the lives of the Tirthankaras and Jain legends. The temple blends Jain and Islamic architectural styles. A tall manastambha, a column of honour with detailed carvings, stands in the complex, and the inner hall is spacious enough for about 2000 people.
