Why devotees come here
Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple stands in Ishwaripur village, Satkhira, in southwestern Bangladesh. It is dedicated to Devi Kali and is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. Narendra Modi prayed here in 2021, the first foreign head of state to visit it.
According to legend, Sati's palms and soles fell at this place. Hindu mythology counts 51 Shakti Peeths, scattered across India and neighbouring countries, and this temple is one of them. It is a famous Hindu pilgrimage site in Ishwaripur.
Records suggest that a Hindu king set up the temple in the 16th century. Vikramaditya established a kingdom with its capital at Ishwaripur, now in Satkhira District. Ishwaripur was the capital city from 1590 to 1610. Before the 2021 visit, the Hindu community and temple authorities, with government support, redecorated the temple.
On 27 March 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi prayed at the temple and placed a crown on the deity. He was the first foreign head of state to visit it, and devotees received him with conch shells. The village sits on the bank of the Ichamati River, now called the Kadamtali Canal, in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira district. The first Catholic church of Bengal was built in Ishwaripur in 1599. A Hammamkhana in the village was built in the late sixteenth century by Maharaja Pratapaditya.
