Why devotees come here
Pavagadh is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas. Tradition says the toe of Devi Sati fell on this hill, and Mahakali appeared here. The shrine dates to the 10th or 11th century, older than the city of Champaner below it.
In the inner sanctum, Kalika Mata is worshipped as the mukhwato, a head painted bright red. Full idols of Mahakali and yantras of Bahuchara stand beside her. The hill and the ruins of Champaner form the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004.
The temple was rebuilt with a new shikhar in 2022. On 18 June 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the kalash and flag on top, after a gap of nearly 500 years. The temple premises were enlarged from 545 to 2,980 square metres across three levels.
