The mandir in Bochasan is the first mandir of BAPS. It marked the beginning of BAPS as an organization, because it was the first mandir to hold both murtis in its central shrine. Legend says Swaminarayan promised a villager, Kashidas Mota, that he would stay in Bochasan forever.
Swaminarayan first came to Bochasan in 1799, as a teenager named Nilkanth Varni. On 5 June 1907, Shastri Yagnapurushdas consecrated the murtis in the newly built mandir. Shastriji Maharaj is credited with establishing BAPS on that day.
The mandir was built by Shastri Maharaj, founder of the Bochasan Swaminarayan Sect. The mandir is a shikharbaddha, a temple with a spire. The murtis installed here are of Swaminarayan and Gunatitanand Swami. Both murtis, of Akshar and Purushottam, are in the central shrine.
