Adi Badri is one of the most ancient Vedic religious sites in Haryana, often linked to the Saraswati River. It is an important tirtha on the 48 kos parikrama of Kurukshetra, along with Dhosi Hill and Kapal Mochan. Legend says Ved Vyasa wrote the Bhagavata Purana here, and that the Pandavas stayed during the last year of their exile. Some hold that the Somb river here follows the course of the Rig Vedic Sarasvati.
The group of Hindu temples here dates from the 9th century. Several 9th-century statues of Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha were found at the site. Remains of Buddhist stupas and monasteries near the Som and Saraswati confluence, built of hard brick, are about 1500 to 2000 years old. A late medieval Adi Badri-Narayana temple on the Somb river is said to have been built by Adi Shankaracharya.
