Why devotees come here
Kapal Mochan is an ancient pilgrimage site on the Bilaspur road, 17 km north-east of Yamunanagar-Jagadhri city in Haryana. Pilgrims bathe in its sacred ponds. The Puranas and the Mahabharata name the place.
The Puranas and the Mahabharata name Kapal Mochan, and the place is said to have been visited by Mahadeva, Rama and the Pandavas. Local legend says that killing a Brahmin is a major sin, but a bath in this pond washes that sin away. Another local legend says Rama came here in his Pushpak Viman after killing Ravana. One of the ponds is called Surya Kund. People from all parts of the country feel spiritually elevated by bathing here.
Statues found at the site show how old it is. A statue of Uma Mahadev is dated to the 9th or 10th century, and a Ganesha statue to the 11th or 12th century. Remains from the Gupta period are also here. The complex now has a Mahadev temple, a Gau Bacha temple, a gurdwara and an ancient pool. The Haryana government is developing Kapal Mochan Tirth around the sacred pond, This is part of an INR1200 crore Morni to Kalesar tourism development plan, announced in January 2019.
