Swaminarayan Akshardham is a large Hindu temple complex in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Its central chamber holds a seven-foot, gold-leafed murti of Swaminarayan. The temple is built from pink sandstone and has no steel or iron in its structure.
The name Akshardham refers to the divine abode of Swaminarayan in BAPS philosophy. The complex covers 23 acres in Gandhinagar and was inspired by Yogiji Maharaj. Its central chamber holds a seven-foot, gold-leafed murti of Swaminarayan, which followers worship.
The foundation stone was laid by Pramukh Swami on 14 December 1979. The completed complex was inaugurated on 4 November 1992.
At the centre of the complex stands the Akshardham temple. It measures 108 feet high, 131 feet wide and 240 feet long, with 97 carved pillars. It is built from 6,000 metric tons of pink sandstone from Rajasthan. In keeping with Vedic architectural principles, no steel or iron was used anywhere in the temple.
