Bageshwar Dham is the temple of Balaji Maharaj, a form of Hanuman. Devotees call the deity swayambhu, which means one who appeared by himself. The temple stands in Gadha village, on the Khajuraho Panna Road, about 25 km from Chhatarpur.
The temple is currently led by Dhirendra Krishna Shastri. Reports about him say his grandfather was a scholar linked to the Nirmohi Akhara, a traditional order of ascetics.
Many devotees come to make an arzi, a petition. Devotees and admirers say that getting a petition heard depends on luck and takes several days of waiting. Those who want to make one must first give up non-vegetarian food, garlic, onion and liquor. Large numbers of devotees come for darshan on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
