Why devotees come here
Draksharamam Temple stands in Draksharamam town in Konaseema district, Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the five Pancharama Kshetras, temples sacred to Shiva, and Shiva is worshipped here as Bhimeswara Swamy. The town is also called Dakshin Kasi.
The town is referred to as Dakshin Kasi. Legend says Daksha, head of all the prajapatis, performed a yagna here. Folklore adds that the seven sages, the Sapta Maha Rishis, split the Godavari at this place into seven streams. It is also believed that Surya installed the lingam, and that Shri Rama worshipped Shiva here.
Inscriptions in the temple show it was built between the 9th and 10th centuries by the Eastern Chalukyan king Bhima. The big mandapam was built by Ganga Mahadevi, daughter-in-law of the Eastern Ganga king Narasingha Deva I of Odisha. Architecturally and sculpturally, the temple reflects a blend of Chalukyan and Chola styles.
The dual storeyed shrine has four entrances in its outer circumambulatory path. Each entrance has a towering gopuram pointing in one of the four cardinal directions. Worship and abhisheka, the ritual bathing of the 10 ft lingam, take place from the first floor of this two-tiered building.
