Why devotees come here
Ichchhadevi Mandir-Tathastu is a temple to Devi Ichchha in Ichchhapur village, 23 km from Burhanpur. Legend says the village takes its name from the blessing Devi Ichchha gave a Brahmin. A fair is held here twice a year during Navratri, and it draws thousands of worshippers.
Legend says Ichchhapur village takes its name from Devi Ichchha, the deity worshipped at the temple. The Tapti Mahatamya, a book on the holy river Tapti, mentions this place. It tells how a Brahmin named Devidas meditated to win the blessing of Devi Ichchha. Impressed by his devotion, she appeared and blessed him, and the village came to be known as Ichchhapur.
The temple is said to have been built by a Maratha commander. He had prayed to Devi Ichchha for a son, and once that wish was granted he ordered a temple built for her. One account dates the temple to about 450 years ago and calls its builder a Maratha subedar.
The temple sits in Ichchhapur village. Burhanpur, the administrative seat of Burhanpur District, lies 23 km away. Twice a year, during Navratri, a fair is held at the temple, and thousands of worshippers come for it.
