Why devotees come here
Jalpamata Temple stands on a high hill about 4 km from Rajgarh town in Madhya Pradesh. Maa Durga is worshipped here as Jalpa Mata, and the temple is known as a Siddhapeeth. Thousands of devotees come during Navratri.
Maa Durga is worshipped here as Jalpa Mata, and she is also called Matarani. The temple is known as a Siddhapeeth. Legend says Raja Umath of Rajgarh once worshipped Maa Durga to protect the people, and she appeared on this spot.
Matarani was established on the hill about 550 years ago, when Bhil kings ruled Rajgarh. Later the temple was declared a trust with the cooperation of the administration. Road routes to the temple were built after the trust was formed, and the temple now sits on the top of the hill.
Belief holds that when no auspicious time, called a muhurta, is available for a wedding, the marriage is performed in the court of Matarani. After weddings, the couple and both families visit to see her. Every year a 1111-metre long chunar is carried from Rajmahal to her court.
