Why devotees come here
Madhavrai Temple stands at Madhavpur Ghed, a village on the seashore of Porbandar district in the state of Gujarat. It is dedicated to Madhavraiji, a form of Krishna. Local legend says Krishna married Rukmini at this spot, and an annual fair, held in Chaitra from Ram Navami, marks the event.
Madhavpur is the site of an ancient temple of Madhavraiji, a form of Krishna. Local legend says Krishna married Rukmini here, and the temple and an annual fair both commemorate that marriage. The village lies on the seashore of Porbandar district.
The current temple was rebuilt in 1840 by Shri Rupaniba, the Queen of Porbandar. Attacks by Muslim invaders badly damaged the original temple, and its ruins still stand at the site. A 15th century Madhavrai temple marks the site.
The newer temple is used for worship today, next to the old one. The fair is held every year in Chaitra, beginning on Ram Navami. A colourful chariot carries the idol of Krishna around the village, and the festivities usually continue for five days. The Shree Madhavrayji Temple Trust organises the fair rituals.
