Why devotees come here
Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Temple sits in the forests of Mulugu district, Telangana. It is the setting for the Sammakka Saralamma Jathara, recognized as Asia's largest tribal religious congregation.
Sammakka and Saralamma, a mother and daughter, are worshipped as forms of Adi Parashakti. Legend says Sammakka was named and raised as a tribal leader. The stream nearby, Jampanna Vagu, is named after the fallen tribal warrior Jampanna.
According to the official website, it began as a humble tribal observance and is now among the world's most remarkable spiritual pilgrimages. The story of the Koyas starts with the Kakatiya king Prataprudra, who imposed a heavy tax on them that they could not pay. The state declared the festival official in 1998 and laid down a motorable road. Until then, the only way to reach Medaram was by bullock cart.
Medaram village is in Tadvai mandal, inside the Eturnagaram forest, and the jathara is held there every two years. Sammakka arrives on the gadde from Chilakala Gutta, and Saralamma from Kannepally village. The gathering is popularly known as the Medaram Maha Jathara.
