Negheriting Shiva Doul is a famous temple of Shiva, set on a hillock at Dergaon. The town is also known as Devargaon, which means the village of Shiva. Dergaon is a town and a municipality in the Golaghat district of Assam. The temple is a national protected monument, and it is one of the major temples in Golaghat district.
Legend says a devotee of Shiva found the ruined temple and the linga in the shallow water of the Dihing river. The spot is now known as Sheetal Negheri. The older temple is said to have been built in the 8th century AD by the Kacharis. It is mentioned in the Buranjis in connection with wars with the Kachari kingdom in the early 16th century. In 1765, Ahom king Swargadeo Rajeswar Singha built a brick temple in place of the older stone temple.
The temple was planned and designed by the architect Ghanashyam Khonikar. It is a Panchayatana temple, a group of five shrines built around one main tower. The main shrine has the tower, and four subsidiary shrines stand at the four corners. They are dedicated to Devi Durga, Ganesha, Surya and Vishnu. A Banalinga about three feet in diameter is established in the main temple.
