Why devotees come here
Ram Ghat is a ghat in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Ujjain stands on the eastern bank of the Shipra River, 190 km west of Bhopal, the state capital. The Shahi Bath of the Simhasta Kumbh takes place on this ghat.
Legend says Shri Rama performed his father's last rites at Ujjain, at the place that became known as Ram Ghat. Ujjain is also called the Mokshadayini city, the city of liberation, because bathing in the Shipra is believed to free one from sins. Puranic legend adds that drops of amrita, the elixir of immortality, spilled at Ujjain during the churning of the ocean of milk. Ujjain is one of four such places, along with Haridwar, Nashik and Prayag.
Ujjain is an ancient city on the Malwa plateau. It has one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, and it is one of seven cities said to give salvation. It remains an important place of pilgrimage for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Shaktas. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is held here every 12 years, and the Shahi Bath of the Simhasta takes place on Ram Ghat.
