Why devotees come here
Sri Veerabhadra Swamy temple stands in Kuravi mandal of Mahabubabad district, Telangana. The deity is shown with three eyes and ten hands. Local lore dates the temple to around 900 AD, and Maha Shivaratri is the biggest event in Kuravi.
The temple is dedicated to Veerabhadra Swamy, a historic temple in Kuravi mandal. Local lore says Bheema Raju of the Vengi Chalukya dynasty built this temple around 900 AD. The deity is shown in a fierce form, with three eyes and ten hands. In the legend, Veerabhadra is the eldest son of Shiva, and his brothers are Kala Bhairava, Ganapathy, Karthikeyan and Iyappan. The traveller Marko-Poli is said to have referred to the temple, which stood as the capital of the Vengi Chalukya dynasty.
Later, the Kakatiya ruler Betharaju I took up the renovation of the temple. Peddacheruvu, a site spread over 100 acres, lies one kilometre from the temple. Tribal and non-tribal devotees come here to seek blessings. The annual jathra Brahmotsavams are held here during Maha Shivaratri, the biggest event in Kuravi.
