Why devotees come here
Devotees worship the Narmada as Maa Narmada, a living mother. At Gwarighat her temple stands at the water's edge, and travel guides describe it as half submerged in the river. Every evening, lamps are lit along the steps and the Narmada aarti is offered from the ghat.
Gwarighat is also a place of last rites. Hindus perform cremation rites here as set out in the Garuda Purana. Near Uma Ghat is the Narmada Sidh Kund, where rishis are said to have done tapas. Gurdwara Gwari Ghat Sahib, linked to Guru Nanak, a Sai Baba temple and a Jain temple are nearby.
On 6 March 2021, President Ram Nath Kovind attended the Narmada aarti here. Newspapers called it the first such honour to the river by a head of state.
