Why devotees come here
Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple stands at the foot of Moti Dungri hill in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and is dedicated to Ganesha. Regarded as the most auspicious and important religious temple in Jaipur, it was built in 1761. It stands next to the Birla Temple.
The temple stands at the foot of Moti Dungri, a small hill in Jaipur, which also has a fort of the same name. It is regarded as the most auspicious and important religious temple in the city. Legend says a king of Mewar was taking a large Ganesh idol home on a bullock cart. He vowed to build a temple wherever the cart stopped, and it stopped at the foot of Moti Doongri.
The temple was built in 1761 under the supervision of Seth Jai Ram Paliwal. It is in the Nagara style, made of limestone and marble, and its layout is modelled on a Scottish castle. Construction was completed in four months. At the front are three entrance gates and a few steps. The Ganesha icon is said to be more than five hundred years old. The icon is sindoor-coloured, and its trunk turns to the right.
The name Moti Dungri means pearl hill, because the hill is said to resemble a pearl drop. The Birla Temple, which is dedicated to Lakshmi Narayan, stands south of this temple. In the Moti Dungri Fort complex nearby, a Shiva lingam opens to visitors only once a year, on Mahashivratri.
