Sri Shalleshwar Mandir stands in the Jhanda Bazar locality of Sarila, a town in Hamirpur district. Sarila is a former princely state and a nagar panchayat in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is described as the oldest Hindu temple in the town. The district administration's page links the temple to the Mahabharata period and to a king named Maharaj Shalla.
The temple was renovated in the Chandela period, in the monastic tradition. The Shivling inside is the central object of worship. It is said to get bigger every year.
On Maha Shivratri, the sacred thread worn on the Shivling is said to become as small as a grain of rice. On the same day, a marriage procession of Shiva is carried out through the whole town.
