Why devotees come here
The Sri Varahaswamy Temple at Tirumala is dedicated to Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu. It is believed to be older than the Venkateswara shrine, and it stands on the northern bank of Swami Pushkarini.
Local legend says that after Varaha saved the earth from the asura Hiranyaksha, he stayed on this hill, on the northern bank of Swami Pushkarini. The legend also says that the first bell, puja and naivedyam, the food offering, were given to Varaha before they were offered to Venkateswara. Devotees are prescribed to keep to that order.
The shrine, also called Bhu Varahaswamy Temple, was renovated by Pedda Tirumalacharya in 1535 CE. It is a rock temple on the northern bank of Swami Pushkarini, entered from North Mada street of the Venkateswara Temple. The temple is part of the Venkateswara temple and is administered by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
Sitting at roughly 980 metres, or 3,220 feet, the hill town lies in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh.
