Why devotees come here
Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple stands at Tiruchanoor, about 5 km from Tirupati, and is run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Padmavathi is the consort of Venkateswara. Pilgrims traditionally visit her here before they climb to Tirumala.
Padmavathi is worshipped as a form of Lakshmi, and Tiruchanoor is where tradition says she took birth on earth. The temple pages of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams tell of Lakshmi leaving Vaikuntha after Sage Bhrigu struck Vishnu's chest. She is said to have prayed for twelve years by a pool near the Swarnamukhi river. In the thirteenth year she rose from a golden lotus, on the Panchami of Karthika.
Another telling says King Akasharaja found a baby girl inside a lotus while ploughing for a yagna. He named her Padmavathi. When she grew up, Venkateswara came looking for her, and the two were married. TTD says the temple was built in the time of Tondaman Chakravarthi, her elder brother.
The Padma Sarovaram, the temple tank, is held to be where the lotus bloomed. Devotees traditionally bathe there before darshan. The temple has a five-tier gopuram with seven golden kalashas. The small Krishna Swamy shrine in the same compound is the oldest, with records dating to 1221 CE.
